Hypnosis isn’t just about swinging a watch in front of somebody, making people do crazy things and then snapping your fingers to snap them out of it again.
That’s soooo cliche…
Those might be some of the things you think about when you hear the word hypnosis, but the truth is that there is so much more to it than things like that.
In fact, most hypnosis is way more subtle than that…
Personally I find the topic of hypnosis and NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) pretty fascinating and I’ve spent quite some time learning about it from some of the top experts.
One guy that I particularly recommend you check out if you want to learn more about this kind of stuff is David Snyder.
You’re already a master hypnotist!
You heard me right, you’re a hypnotist my friend!
In its most basic form, hypnosis is nothing more than making suggestions to the mind (especially the unconscious) to make people think or act a certain way or to influence them some way, shape or form.
Of course there’s a whole lot more to it than that though.
You’ve been hypnotizing yourself your entire life.
Before I go into that, it’s really important that you know the basics of how our brains work.
You may or may not know this already:
But there’s actually 2 parts of your mind. Firstly there’s your conscious mind and then there are the subconscious and unconscious. The latter two are pretty similar, but there are a few differences. Read this article for a more in-depth explanation.
You’re probably already familiar with the conscious mind, but your subconscious mind is a bit harder to explain.
Think about this for a second:
If I asked you “How do you breath?”, you’d probably stare at me with a silly look and be like “Uhmm, I just do I guess…”. It’s not really something you can explain.
And in addition to that:
Your breathing isn’t something you’re usually even aware of. Although you may notice you’re taking deep heavy breaths right now.
Funny isn’t it?
As I mentioned your breathing, you probably actually started to notice that you are breathing, perhaps even for the first time today.

Same thing if I asked you how you walk around from one side of the room to the other. You’d probably respond with a stupid yet true answer like “Well, I just put one foot in front of the other”.
Although I don’t really believe in stupid answers, there are only stupid questions if you ask me.
Anyway, the point is:
You’re not consciously aware of how you’re doing it. It’s all taken care of by your subconscious mind. Imagine what it’d be like if you had to think about every little thing you do every day, like brushing your teeth, driving, cycling or something like that.
That would be crazy, but, thank god that isn’t the case!
The thing that’s really important for you to know is the fact that a lot of our behavior and thinking are heavily influenced by the unconscious. This is the reason many people find it extremely difficult to get rid of bad habits.
Which brings me back to you being a hypnotist.
Like I said hypnosis (including self hypnosis) at the core is influence of the mind, and you’ve been using that power on yourself for almost your entire life!
You may have heard people talk about limiting beliefs.
You have most likely led yourself to believing them, through the power of self hypnosis (and the lack of understanding of it).
But, there’s some awesome news:
There are 2 particular features of your subconscious mind that you can “exploit” so to speak to train your mind for success.
2 Things you need to know about your subconscious mind
The first thing about your subconscious is that it cannot deal with negatives.
Allow me to demonstrate:
What I want you to do right now is take a deep breath and gather all the willpower that you posses right now. Then, I want you to use that willpower to NOT think about what you’re about to read.
Just resist any urge you may have, okay?
Alright, I want you to not think of a kangaroo. Whatever you do, don’t think of a pink kangaroo or roller blades, just don’t think of it. Ignore any thoughts you may have about that ridiculous pink kangaroo.
Also, while you’re at it, don’t think of a yellow banana either. So don’t think of a pink kangaroo or a yellow banana. And no matter what you do, don’t think about our hoppy friend actually eating that yellow banana.
And that ends the little experiment, how’d you do?
You most likely thought about the banana and kangaroo, didn’t you? Meanwhile you’re probably not thinking about oranges. Although, now that I’ve mentioned it, you might actually be.
Mind control baby!
A little side note: I’m sitting here in my home office grinning thinking about how easy it is for me to remotely control your thoughts. *Insert evil genius’ laugh here*
Just kidding… kinda. ;)
The thing about it is that in order for you to not think about it, your brain first needs to have a picture to reference about what it shouldn’t think about. Which is why you may often see images in your head (or just think) about random stuff being said in a conversation.
I know that happens to me frequently.
Before I go into how to use this little Jedi mind trick for yourself, let’s go over the other thing you’ll need to understand about your subconscious mind.
It cannot tell the difference between what is real and what is vividly imagined.
Have you ever watched a movie? Perhaps the one about Skippy or those little yellow things? You know, minions. You didn’t think I was referring to a movie about bananas, did you?
Have you ever watched a horror movies and halfway through your heart is racing and you can feel it in your throat, you’re shaking and you’re actually scared shitless?
Even though it’s “just a movie”?
Well, now you know why. It’s because you were so absorbed in the movie that it felt incredibly real, which caused your body to react to it.
How most people use self hypnosis for their unsuccess
Let’s quickly rap about why most people can’t seem to shake their negative habits.
Take smoking as an example:
Pop Quiz: What is one of the phrases that most people trying to quit smoking are using frequently?
From what I’ve experienced from people around me, it’s phrases like: “I really should quit smoking” or “Yeah, I’m really trying to stop smoking”.
Can you see the problem with that?
Firstly, since you’re referencing smoking you’ll probably find yourself thinking about how good a cigarette tastes or how it helps you relax after a long day at the office (or after sex).
And before you know it, you may feel the urge to have one.
Yes, you may use your willpower to suppress these thoughts, but you can’t stop thinking about wanting to smoke a cigarette while riding on a pink kangaroo that’s eating a banana.
By the way, guess what you’ll be dreaming about tonight after reading this blog post? ;)
Just kidding, I’m actually not sure if subtle (or maybe this isn’t that subtle…) can make you dream about it. Although I must admit it would be quite hilarious if I could make you do that through writing. If you do, please do me a quick favor and let me know in the comment section below, really curious about that.
But I’m drifting off topic here…
I’ll be going into a strategy you can take and apply starting today in a few moments. For now know that you should always state the things you do want, instead of the things you don’t want.
One more thing before that:
Try to avoid the word try as well. The word itself implies that there is a possibility of failure, but in reality it’s worse than that.
I can’t remember from whom I’ve learned this, but here’s what going to happen when you continuously give your subconscious mind the command to “try to do XYZ”:
Exactly what you’re asking.
It’s going to TRY to do it. If you succeed, that means it can’t help you try to achieve whatever you want to achieve. Which will more than likely lead to more self sabotage.
How to use self hypnosis for success
Time to dive into the exciting part!
It was a long buildup, I know. Yet, it’s important that you know the basics before you’re trying this kind of stuff.
Imagine your course of action as a cruise ship:
Your conscious mind is the captain, while your subconscious will represent the crew in this metaphor.
The captain is great for plotting the route, setting the speed and steering where necessary to make sure the ship reaches its destination.
What do you think would happen if the captain just ordered the entire crew off the ship and tried to do everything himself?
Obviously this situation is not going to end well. Just like in most cases you won’t be able to achieve your goals through conscious effort (willpower) alone.
What about the other way around?
A crew without captain, might still be okay. However, since they don’t have a clear direction as to where to go, they may not ever reach that destination. In the best scenario they will still get to the desired location, but it will take more time to get there.
Which is why you need to use both. So let me ask you this:
What if you could create patterns that will slowly get down into your subconscious and guide you along the way, do you think that will help you achieve your dreams faster and more easily?
Of course you do, you wouldn’t be reading this otherwise.
Here’s how to use self hypnosis for your success:
First thing you’ll need to do is have a clear goal in mind. It’s pretty hard to get somewhere if you don’t know where you’re going.
Or to put it differently (as a quote from Alice in Wonderland):
Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”
“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the Cat.
“I don’t much care where–” said Alice.
“Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,” said the Cat.
“–so long as I get SOMEWHERE,” Alice added as an explanation.
“Oh, you’re sure to do that,” said the Cat, “if you only walk long enough.”
Yup, you’re actually getting advice from a (made up) cat here. It’s pretty solid advice though. ;)
When you talk about your goal, both to other people and to YOURSELF, always state things in the positive.
Instead of saying “I want to eat less junk food”, try something like “Tonight I’d like to have some pasta with veggies”.
It’s even better if you can attach strong emotions to it.
For the final part we’re going to use a technique that may sound pretty silly at first, but it can actually be pretty useful if you take the time to actually use it.
It’s called the “Theater of the Mind”.
This is actually something I got from a best-selling book by Maxwell Maltz called Psycho-Cybernetics. Which is a great ready by the way.
With this theater of the mind, we’re getting pretty deep into the visualization. We’ll be using the fact that vividly imagined things will be perceived just as the real deal would.
Find a quiet place, and pretend you’re sitting in a movie theater.
You already know what your ideas situation is. Now I want you to pretend that perfect situation is playing in front of you exactly the way you want it.
Experience it fully and try to imagine it as happening in the here and now and that it’s real.
If you want to take things one step further, step out of the role of spectator and jump into the scene you’re playing on the screen. Make it first person, you are that person in the movie!
Could also apply:
For anything less than positive playing in the theater, you want to distance yourself from the picture. Imagine it’s somebody else if you can, sit back and watch.
This may help you judge things objectively.
In most instances though, I would recommend you use your mental movies and self hypnosis to project the positive things that you do want to manifest in your life.
Keep it in focus at all times and practice it daily.
Of course, this won’t be a magic bullet that will instantly make you a more successful person. That’s just not how things work (although it would be pretty cool).
Doing this will take effort and persistence.
Over time, you’ll find that doing the things you want to do (and know you should) easier to actually do.
The way you talk to yourself is extremely important.
You’ll want to use your conscious mind in order to train your subconscious, and create habits that will carry you towards your goal.
Yes it’s going to be tough at times, but it’ll be worth it as well.
If you got value out of this post, please go ahead and share it on social media and leave me a comment below.
Also, if you want to dive deeper into the topic of hypnosis, I’d recommend you take a look at the STEALTH training.
Ps. Try not to dream about those kangaroos and bananas, okay? ;)
