Do you have friends and family that are giving you a hard time by being negative Nelly when it comes to your business?
How do you deal with them?
Let me tell you, I’ve had my share of negativity from most of the people around me. And it can be a devastating blow… if you allow it to.
Here I’d like to share some of my story and how I’ve dealt with the negativity I’ve gotten in the hopes that it might help you get better at dealing with your demons… erm I mean dangerously negative people.
How I got started
My first experience with “internet marketing” wasn’t all daisies and butterflies, who would’ve thought?
Truth is, I was 16 and pretty naive lol.
What I got into was things like “get paid to click on ads” and those kind of things, things I wouldn’t touch with a ten foot pole after everything I’ve learned since then.
After not making more than a handful of pennies, I gave up on it. Only to return to this realm about two years or so later.
This time trying things like “traffic exchangers” to the point where my figers were hurting like crazy, only slightly painful than that of not seeing any return on the sweat equity I invested.
Thinking back, these experiences did something important…
The lit the fire burning in my heart today. The fire of entrepreneurship, the flames of business and the burning desire to be my own boss and rise above the sheeple working a 9-5 for forty years of their lives with nothing to show for.
Not for me, no way José.
The turning point
At a time when I was almost ready to give up again, I came across a training that taught me how to build a REAL business.
Otherwise I would have probably given it up, defeated after having failed for what seemed to be eons.
This training I ended up on was with two amazing people: Tim Erway and Ray Higdon.
The topic of that webinar I was on was… can you guess it?
It was a training about blogging and what Ray made the most sense anyone had made up until that point, some of the pieces simply fell into place.
At the time, I wasn’t ready to act on the information yet.
But, that one training made all the difference for me. What it did was give me hope. Seeing Ray be more real than anyone I’d seen online and living an awesome lifestyle got me thinking about what’s possible.
And to this day, I still can’t thank him enough.
Turnin’ dem clockz forward
I’ll save some parts after that for my biography or some other time, but not now.
After all this blog post supposedly about how to deal with negative people and dream stealers. Yet, I just came to notice I haven’t talked about any of that stuff so far.
So somewhere last year I dropped out of college, for good!
I had realized that all colleges do is train sheeple… err employees and that I would never have the life I desire going down that broken road.
By the way, no offence if you’re a student or an employee. I love you and I would love to help you, because there IS a better way. (feel free to contact me).
That’s when people became negative.
My friends thought I was crazy for quitting and they joke around about it saying I’ll never achieve anything and they look at me like I’ve got two heads when I tell ’em I’m going to build a business through the interwebz.
Oh yeah, my parents weren’t all that happy either…
Does this sound at all familiar? Funny faces, ridicule, people joking about it, and so on?
Firstly, realize this:
They don’t know any better. Still clinging to the old dodma’s about life and work, that weren’t even true when they were invented and even less so today with all the opportunities we have at our fingertips right now.
They’re still plugged into to matrix, inside of a pitch black room while having blinders on. And they often think they’re helping you with their negativity…
Pick up thy shield!
The question still remains:
How do you protect yourself against any negative influences?
Because you already know that constant yapping about how it might not work can affect your subconscious and thereby giving you more resistance to the work you need to be doing.
It can be pretty demotivating.
Now here’s the firewall that I have installed for myself:
First and foremost, I don’t focus on the negative stuff. Every day I take in positive messages. I listen to podcasts, audios, watch videos and read listen to books to fill my head with positive messages and useful information.
That’s step numero uno.
For the next step, try to limit contact with extremely negative people. Of course your friends stay your friends, I’m not saying to drop them at a heartbeat and find yourself some new friends.
Although there might be one or two people in your life that are just extremely negative.
For me, the only person I do this with is my dad, which can get pretty hard since we live in the same house. I do whatever I can to not spend any time with him and we talk maybe once or twice a day, because I deliberately avoid him.
He actually thinks I’m anti-social where in fact I’m just avoiding him because he’s the biggest negative influence I’ve got in my life and I need to shield myself from it. Otherwise extremely negative people like this can eventually get to your subconscious mind.
In most cases though you can continue hanging out with the people you’re hanging out with today, just follow the other two advises below.
What I did to reduce people’s jokes is to simply not talk business, or economics with them. If the subject of studies or getting a “good job” came up, I’d stay quiet knowing that I’m right. Just not claiming it to avoid the discussion.
If you don’t expect people to bring it up or laugh, it’ll happen way less often.
And finally there’s another method I’m using.
I suppose I’ve always had quite some stubbornness in me, but these days I’m using that stubbornness to my advantage.
Being stubborn a.k.a. thinking you know better has been one of the keys to minimize the damage people do with their words and actions.
It’s what I call “selective stubbornness”.
Basically I never take any advice from anyone unless they have achieved what I want to achieve in the particular area someone wants to give me advice in.
I spoke of Ray Higdon earlier in this post. If he and my dad would give me identical financial or business advice, I would listen to ray while ignoring my father’s advice even though it’s the exact same advice.
And as a little bonus tip, surround yourself with like-minded people.
Surround yourself with people that are positive, understand what it is you do and support you in every way shape and form. This again will help you stay focused on track while inspiring you instead of demotivating you.
It’s vaccination time!
Right now I’m almost completely immune to the crap people talk about me running my own business, knowing that I will have the last laugh anyway.
These things have helped me deal with some negative people and dream stealers.
Hopefully these tips have been useful to you as well, where you can now start to vaccinate yourself against the plague that is trying to get you and hold you down.
