We are at the start of the new year. Which means many people all around the world have made their new year’s resolutions. You may be one of them.
However, most people don’t ever get their resolutions.
If you want to see proof of this look at the gyms the first week of January and then again somewhere in February.
Then look at the difference in the amount of people…
Why people don’t achieve their goals and new year’s resolutions
The question really is why do so many people not get the results that they want?
And more importantly:
How do YOU reach your goals? What do you have to do to make sure you’ll be successful?
It’s pretty ironic actually…
When people set New Year’s resolutions, they don’t actually set resolutions. They state their dreams, their hopes and their wishes… not their resolutions.
If you look up “to resolve” in the dictionary you get a couple of definitions:
- To come to a definite or earnest decision about ; determine (to do something)
- To deal with conclusively ; settle ; solve
The words I’ve underlined above are the exact reasons why people either reach their goals, or the reasons they don’t.
The reason lots of people give up on their resolutions is because they haven’t made up their minds decisively at all. They’re just expressing their wants!
How to achieve any goal you set for yourself!
Now that you know the biggest flaw in goal setting, let’s talk about actual goal getting.
Again, the first thing you need to do is put your foot down.
Stand up for yourself and decide once and for all that you’re going to do what you want to do. That’s it, period! No matter what happens and no excuses!
Until you can do that, you won’t have much luck with your goals.
The second step is to find your WHY.
It’s one to say “I’m going to make 10k per month in my business this year, period!” And notice how I didn’t write “I want to make 10k per month in my business this year”.
But here’s where it gets powerful:
What’s the reason you want to achieve what you want to achieve?
Maybe you want to fire your boss and have real time freedom, maybe you want to put your kids through college without debt, maybe you want to travel the world.
Whatever it is for you, tie that into your goal so that you have a powerful emotion driven reason why you MUST succeed!
The ONE thing that makes all the difference!
There’s one more important thing you need to reach your goals.
You need to have the belief that you can actually do what you’re telling yourself you will do. Otherwise you’ll be doomed from the very start and likely won’t ever get the end results.
I hear people talk like:
I really want to stop smoking, but it’s probably not going to happen. I like to smoke too much.
And then they start smoking again at the very start of the year.
I don’t know what your goals are, and there may be some of them that you think right now are too big to accomplish. Something so big you cannot possibly believe you can achieve.
And you may very well be right!
If that’s the case for you I’d recommend you chunk it down. Start with a goal like “I won’t smoke for 2 weeks”. Then once you accomplish that you’ll go like “I can go a month without” since you’ve already proven at some level you can do it!
And that is basically why most people are good at goal setting, but not at actual goal GETTING. Apply these steps to whatever you want and you’ll have a much better chance of success!
And of course…
You will need to put in the action steps required to pull it off. I’ve kinda left that part out because it will differ depending on your goals.
Figure out how to do it and then just do it!
Here’s to the art of goal getting!
